Vol. 25, No. 3 [Gene —letter missing]
Vol. 25, No. 4 [Shan]![]()
1-27-47
Dear K. and Family:
For the record Gene’s note is dated 1-23, but the Chicago postmark is 1-25. This means I receive it 1-27—Monday Youngstown. Will get this out this evening and forward to Columbus with request that it be sent on to you without undue delay. On analysis it appears the last two rounds moved at normal pace. The change in routing caused a longer interval for some of us, but the others, must have experienced a corresponding long interval on the preceding round. It should now be adjusted.
This last round is particularly interesting to me for the political and economical lamentations that appear in some sectors. First grant me an “I told you so.” In my letter of Nov. 8th I placed my neck well out with out with the prediction that the girls would “soon have their butter and eggs and soap.” More along that line would sound too Winchellize,
God forbid. I cannot pass without taking issue with Sadie where she quotes our Dad in support of her lament, or one of them. (The quote, “You can’t get lower than the cellar”). Any remark of the kind from him to her could only have related to strictly personal affairs. He experienced no economic disturbance after 1906. A democrat (Wilson) was elected in 1911 for the first time since Cleveland in 1891. Sadie, why not tell us when the remark was made and to what it related. I can’t make myself believe Sadie meant what she wrote in her “observation of the week.” When in history has there ever existed a so-called “one party government” that has not been one of these four: Monarch, Fascism, Socialist or Communist. Take your pick Sadie. Remember Harry Hopkins’ boast “We will spend, spend, spend; Tax, tax, tax and elect, elect and elect.” Who was solely responsible for Hopkins in our government? No one ever had an opportunity to vote for him.
Gee, you asked for an answer too, in your comment on Truman-Lewis-Eisenhower. I can find no fault with your remark, but I would inquire who is responsible for Lewis? Don’t you know? Or, don’t you care to know? Please keep in mind that when I name Lewis, or speak of butter and eggs and soap I speak only of symbols, not of persons or commodities.
Sympathize with you on Sonny’s departure for a year or two. That kind of absence is never welcome. There is, however, some comfort in the thought that all they are shooting at now is a seven or eleven.
Note somewhere along the line that it is Carolyn’s’ turn to contribute an “in-law” letter. Perhaps I better get myself out of the way and give her a chance.
Love, Shan
From reading this letter, I feel like I have an idea of what Shan would be like in person :)
